Directed by Herbert Wise (a long running British TV director from the 1950's onwards), and with a screenplay by the highly respected Nigel Kneale (Quatermass, 1984, Year of the Sex Olympics, The Stone Tape), the story centres around a young solicitor, Arthur Kidd (played by Adrian Rawlins and originally named Kipps in the novel) who is sent by his law firm's senior, Mr Sweetman (David Ryall), from London to the small market town of Crythin Gifford, on the east coast of England.

Very few Hollywood actresses, indeed, had Gloria's striking looks, her natural acting style, on-screen magnetism and sparkling personality (a unique blend of sensuality, straightforwardness and ingeniousness). Nevertheless, she never managed to reach top-stardom. The explanation for this probably lies in that ''ultra-sultry'', ''man-eating'' image of hers, which resulted in her being typecast as all kinds -and variations- of ''trampy'' females: the unfaithful wife, the bar-girl, the nightclub singer, the gangster's floozy,
the conspiring ''other woman''...


When most people reflect upon bygone era's before the dawn of "sexual revolution" in the 1960's, they tend to think of a more simplistic, innocent or naive way of life, as if all taboo breaking and "pushing the envelope" was somehow carried out within the last 30 or 40 years. While this may be true in part, it can itself be a rather naive, rose-tinted view of nostalgia... life before drug fuelled, hippie love-ins wasn't all simply coffee mornings or coat-hanger smiles with Ozzie and Harriet!

Back in 2007, I was fortunate enough to contribute towards Horror 101: The A-List of Horror Films & Monster Movies, Volume 1.
This mammoth project was the brainchild of one Aaron Christensen (pictured left with 'Wizard of Gore' Tom Savini) and featured contributions from some 78 horror fans from around the globe, whose combined efforts created 320 pages of highly engrossing reading, in a bid to create an essential guide covering 110 Horror landmarks in 101 essays; focusing upon must see classics & underrated gems for all those with an interest in the wide expanse of the genre.
